Some 5 weeks ago I returned from an Olsen cruise to beyond the artic circle and it turned out a very unhappy experience. As a diabetic I asked my cruise agent to ensure I had a first sitting dinner, but on arrival at ship I had been allocated 2nd sitting. Before the ship had left Newcastle I saw the Maitre D who said he couldn't help as there was no vacant places and if I had to eat early I should use the self service, this I had to do and again doing so I lost my other request to sit with other single travellers. Unfortunately I contracted a eye infection on the 2nd day at sea and despite two visits to the Doctor and paying £75 I had to wait till I got home to see my own Doctor'The final straw however was during my second week (at last in the main restaurant) when I was asked if I had received my £50 refund for parking in Newcastle, bur when I contacted reception I was informed I was not entitled to any refund as my embarkation leaflet (olsens own) stated £90 where as the others showed only£30. Despite several letters of complain I got nowhere, except to be informed that as I had booked late on a guaranteed basis, I could not get any specials and if I had wanted a a first sitting my cruise agent should had advised me that I should have paid for a more expensive rate,or get a letter from my Doctor to support my diabetic situation. In addition I was unable to claim any on board credit even tho I was an Oceans club member.
Incidently my cruise agent did not know about booking at a higher rate to get a first sitting in the restaurant. Olsens did send me a cheque for £30 in respect of my two Doctors treatment!!!, which I returned to them as I couldn't say where I had picked up the infection, tho I was fine when I boarded.
Needless to say I have decided not to cruise again but if I change my mind never with Olsens

We sailed on Braemar from Leith in July, 2007. We visited Norway, Iceland, Faroe Islands and Orkney. We had a wonderful holiday with a lovely cabin, excellent service everywhere on the ship, great entertainment and wonderful food. The excursions were everything we could have hoped for. We would without doubt cruise with Fred Olsen again and have encouraged our friends to do the same. Submitted by Middleton and Valerie Bruce 4/1/08 Opinion:Disagre

The Exec Chef on Braemar holds a special meeting for those with dietary needs very early in the cruise, discussion with him may have assisted your circumstance. It sounds like the agent used was at fault rather than Fred Olsen as all ships in the fleet provide an excellent dietary needs service. All last minute special deals on a guarenteed cabin basis exclude other offers available and dining time is allocated and not changeable - there would have been a specific notice in your cabin to this effect. An eye infection on the second day is unlikely to have been caught on board. It's a shame you had a bad experience as Braemar is a good ship. Try booking in advance to get a fair deal but also the cabin and sitting of your choice. You get what you pay for at the end of the day

As a diabetic myself,I have always found the staff very helpful and in my experience Olsen's have always listened to and sorted out problems regarding my health ie;putting fridge and sharp's bin in cabin, also when I've asked for fruit & biscuits etc, for either the cabin or on excursions, its always been available. These things should be sorted out by your agents before leaving. Also they have a dietry meeting on the 1st day, where these problems can be sorted. As for onboard spends, or credits, there is a voucher always attached to your ticket booklet if applicable, NO VOUCHER - NO MONEY. Over the past dozen or more cruises, that I have travelled with Olsen's, their paper work has alway's been very clear to understand. I hope that this hasn't put you off cruising, as its a wonderful way for dietry controled people to travel. But in future do some research, ask questions and go to a more informative agent

It sounds like most of your complaints are the fault of your agent, and not Fred Olsen. As an FO customer I've found it quite clear that Oceans 'benefits' are not always available with certain rates
