As we had not been on a cruise before we thought that we would give it a try. We booked via wwwcruise.co.uk, and I have to say the booking process was excellent. Although subsequent to booking and having to contact Fred Olsen cruise lines after we did have some issues. We left Leith Docks in Edinburgh on the afternoon of the 22nd June. Our first port of call was Oslo, which was disappointing, then onto Copenhagen we went on a tour which was ok but too little time to see anything properly, Tallin for me was the highlight of the trip, the tour guide was excellent. would like to spend a few days there. St. Petersberg, again we did a tour the guide was awful, on both tours that we did, wouldnt wish to go back there. Then onto Karlskrona, again ok. Our last port of call prior to the long haul back to edinburgh was Arhus, sadlyagain the tour guide was not very good, she took us through the University Campus. god knows why maybe she thought brick buildings were interesting. We would have liked more time at the reconstructed village, bit like a mini Beamish Museum only an hour alloted then back on the bus. for a bit more boring stuff.
The Ship the Boudicca was quite good although some of the areas looked a bit tired, the staff on board were extremely helpfu, the waiters in particular, always a smile a joke. The entertainment was quite good. The highlight of the cruise were the talks given by LARS THARP from the Antiques Roadshow. the cabinn was quite well appointed, and always mantained well. drinks on board were reasonable £2.35 a pint lager and beer, £2.20 spirits,
Overall would we go on another Cruise, no.
We thought that the organised tours were a rip off, if you go make your own arrangements, too little time in port, seemed that no longer had one docked you were off again .
When is a Cruise line going to be BRAVE enough to BAN SMOKING completely. I bet they would still fill the ship. That was a bad one for us the smell of cigarrete smoke pervading the public areas, some bars we wouldnt go in like the Lido, as smoking was allowed on the starboard side
On the whole the cruise was ok, although mostly a bit of a disapointment, we will not be going on another, but maybe that is just us, not our kind of holiday. I am sure a lot of people get a lot of enjoyment from them.

Sorry your first cruise was disappointing. We visited teh Baltic two years ago on Ocean Majesty. We had a lovely trip. Stockholm was a bit disappointing, but no where looks good in the rain! The Vasa museum was very impressive. Russia is just 'Russia' Queue to get in, queue to get out and queue for everything while you are there. Peterhof was worth the wait. Ocean Majesty is now a 'no smoking' ship, with smoking only allowed on deck. Don't give up on crusing. Perhaps a larger ship might suit you better? We love the friendliness of the small ships, but obviously they have their limitations. Try Norway.

Ships cannot ban smoking they are not under the UK smoking laws. The smoking issue actually falls under the United Nations. So until the UN changes the rules on international shipping no amount of views on this website is going to change it.

Went to the baltics on another cruise line and that was our first cruise. We had a fabulous time - apart from St Petersburg we did all ports via shuttle bus and on foot and could not find any real faults. We loved Oslo also and although a little expensive there was lots to look at. Think maybe you picked the wrong ship as we found the itinerary on our P&O cruise was faultless.

Surprised that you found Oslo disappointing. Granted it's very expensive, but there's plenty to see.

Maybe you just chose the wrong ship and wrong itinerary? Try something completely different next time. Happy cruising.
